Since I cant post on the front page for some reason, Id thought Id share why the L67 motor is amazing.

The Bonneville was unfairly attacked in today’s AOTD.

Agree, which is why I remembered this video, and gave it a share.

People love to knock it, but it was good for its time and can be decent now with some work.

In 2015 240hp out of a 3.8L S/C is something to scoff at.

In 1997 240hp out of a 3.8L S/C was OK, and it was better at torque at 280 lb-ft. The ‘97 Mustang GT had 215 hp. The 300ZX was making 300hp and 283 lb-ft out of 3.0L with two turbos, which is obviously more than the L67 at the time but not great in today’s world.

This was done a long time ago, and the car has since retired.

Except that is totally different and not near as cool...

First off: shit, didn’t mean to reply to you. Thats on me.

Second: I disagree, because you think a newer bonneville is “cool”.

One could almost conclude from it being retired that it couldn't do tens reliably …. maybe not the best engine then.

I made the switch from an ‘01 GTP to an ‘04 GTO once my GP was knocking on the door of 200k. While I love the GTO, the Grand Prix was no slouch, could seat 5 people comfortably (GTO only holds 4), and got 30 mpg highway regularly with a full GM Performance parts cat back exhaust and ZZPerformance tune. The GTO is able to hit 20 mpg on the highway if I drive long enough with the cruise control on, and it has a tuned PCM, shorty headers, high-flow cats, and a Magnaflow cat-back. The trunk on the GP is cavernous compared to the golf bag size of the GTO. (Thanks for putting the gas tank back there, GM) If the 4T65E-HD was a bit more stout, and the built aftermarket transmissions weren’t so pricey, I’d have kept it as I only got $1500 for my trade in.

Also, if you swap the S/C for a turbo, that engine WAKES UP.

Bonneville/grand prix is obviously a better “car” …. but turning a FWD family sedan into an all out drag car doesnt make mush sense imo.

It’s cool because it isn’t cool. It’s a FWD blown V6 running mid 10s. That’s a lot cooler than a RWD V8 super sedan. You expect the V8 to be quick, but not the ludicrously heavy FWD wannabe muscle car.

Agreed, but that argument can be made for any car. To get the most out of a car at a dragstrip, you’re going to have to remove most of the things that make it a street car. Regardless of what you have, if you’re going to do it, do it all the way, I guess.

Sleeper status for sure, esp. with those stock wheels.

Depending on the year, the INTENSE parts may have had something to do with that.

For $1000 you could probably be mid 13’s back in 2000 in an otherwise stock car. That wasn’t too bad.

First gear in the GTP as you recall was a 2.93. Made for highway economy, not moving a sedan of the GP’s size out in a hurry.

I geared up in my old one and it was a huge difference.

That car had full interior, and a partial cage.

I used to work with a guy that has a GS-R Integra with a full interior and partial cage. I teased him about all the money he threw at it until he showed me his dyno sheet. 700 hp. Then I saw him run at the dragstrip. He’s close to the 9’s. His best was a 10.3. Either way, that’s an impressive thing to do and still be streetable, but throw enough money at any car, doesn’t matter what wheels are driven, and you’ll hit 10’s eventually. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
